What does paving cost in Johannesburg? A sourced guide for 2026
Published price ranges from Johannesburg paving contractors, each one attributed to its source, plus the part those tables leave out: why two quotes for the same driveway can be tens of thousands of rand apart.
Read this first
We do not lay paving and we do not set prices. Every figure on this page was published by a paving contractor or a contractors' price guide, and we name the source next to it. They are their figures, retrieved on 12 October 2026, not ours and not a quote. Your price depends on your site, and only a contractor who has measured it can give you one.
The ranges are wide because the jobs are different. A small, flat single driveway in standard concrete pavers and a large, sloping double driveway in cobbles are both "a driveway". Use the tables to get a sense of scale, then use the second half of this guide to understand your own quotes.
Cost per square metre by paver type
Sinqobile Construction, a Johannesburg paving contractor, publishes a 2026 cost guide that gives installed prices per square metre by paver type. Its headline is that paving in Johannesburg costs R180 to R900 per square metre installed, depending mainly on the material.

What a whole driveway costs
The same guide converts those rates into driveway totals. Its range for a single-car driveway is R3,600 to R21,000, and for a double-car driveway R6,300 to R49,000, depending on the paver.

How the price varies across the metro
Builders in Gauteng publishes a regional table for 2026 that sets Johannesburg and Sandton slightly above Midrand and the East Rand, and Pretoria and Centurion below both. Sinqobile's guide makes a similar point in percentages: it puts Sandton and Bryanston 10 to 15 percent above its average, Fourways and Midrand at average rates and Roodepoort and the West Rand 5 to 10 percent below. The Handyman Johannesburg's driveway guide gives R350 to R650 per square metre for standard driveway paving in Johannesburg's suburbs and R320 to R600 for Randburg.
Note that these sources measure different things. Builders in Gauteng's table appears to give lower per-square-metre figures than the other two for similar materials, and the guides do not all say what is included. That is exactly why a published rate is a starting point, not a quote.

Why two quotes for the same driveway differ
This is the part the price tables cannot show. When two honest contractors quote the same driveway and the numbers are far apart, the difference is almost always in work you cannot see once the job is finished:
- Excavation depth. How far down they dig. More depth means more labour, more spoil and more base material.
- Sub-base. What material goes in, how thick it is and how it is compacted. Sinqobile's guide warns that skimping on the sub-base saves a little up front and costs far more in repairs within a few years.
- Removal and cartage. Lifting an old driveway and carting it away can be a large share of the price, and some quotes leave it out.
- Drainage. Channel drains, kerb outlets and the falls needed on a sloping Johannesburg stand. Sinqobile's guide puts the add-on for slope and drainage at R2,000 to R6,000.
- Edge restraint. Kerbs or a concrete haunch. The same guide prices concrete edging at R80 to R150 per linear metre and a brick soldier course at R120 to R200 per metre.
- Ground. Soft or uneven ground needing extra excavation and fill; Sinqobile lists R30 to R60 per square metre for this, and R40 to R80 per square metre for removing old paving or concrete.
- Pattern and cuts. Herringbone and curved layouts need more cutting and labour than a straight stretcher bond.
A cheap quote that leaves out drainage, removal and edging is not cheaper. It is a different, smaller job. Our guide to comparing paving quotes gives a line-by-line checklist.

Why the ground changes the price in Johannesburg
Johannesburg's ground is not the same everywhere, and it shows up in quotes. Much of the north sits on granite, where residual soils have been described as potentially collapsible when wet since the 1960s. Northcliff is on a hard ridge of quartzite and shale, where excavation may hit rock. Parts of the West Rand and East Rand are underlain by dolomite, where engineers stress that concentrated water must be managed. A contractor who prices a deeper base, extra drainage or rock breaking on one property and not another is not necessarily over-charging. Ask them why.

How to use these figures
- Measure your area roughly, so you know whether you are talking about 25 square metres or 100.
- Use the tables to sense-check the scale of a quote, not to argue with a contractor about a single rand figure.
- Get at least three written quotes on the same scope, and compare them line by line.
- Ask every contractor to list removal, base, drainage and edging separately.
- Remember that the dry months, roughly April to August, are usually the busiest installation season, which can affect availability.
Frequently asked questions
How much does paving cost per square metre in Johannesburg?
Sinqobile Construction's 2026 guide gives R180 to R900 per square metre installed, depending mainly on the paver. Your own price depends on your site and needs a measured quote.
How much is a double driveway?
The same guide gives R6,300 to R49,000 for a double-car driveway, depending on size and paver. Removal of an old driveway and drainage can add to that.
Why is my quote higher than the published price?
Usually because it includes work the tables do not: removing the old surface, a deeper base, drainage, edging or difficult access. Ask for a line-by-line breakdown.
Do you set these prices?
No. We do not lay paving or set prices. The figures belong to the sources named on this page.
