Granite in the middle, dolomite to the north

Midrand grew up around Halfway House, and it sits on the granite that geologists call the Halfway House Granite. South African engineers have described residual granite soils that can collapse when they get wet under load. Further north, towards Centurion, the picture changes: research on Gauteng's dolomite describes the dolomite as forming arches around the Halfway House Granite, and SRK Consulting names Centurion among the areas underlain by dolomite.

So a Midrand stand may be on granite soils, close to the dolomite edge, or in between. A geotechnical report for the development, where one exists, is the best guide.

Newer homes, bigger areas

Many Midrand homes are in newer estates and complexes, where the first paving was laid by the developer. As those surfaces age, enquiries move from new paving to extensions, patios and relays. One contractor's published guide describes Fourways and Midrand as the most competitive market for paving rates in the area. See the paving cost guide for sources.
