Sinking paving is a symptom

Most sinking paving is caused by something ordinary: a thin base, a leaking pipe, a gutter emptying onto the driveway, or water ponding at a low point. On the West Rand there is another reason to take it seriously. SRK Consulting names the West Rand among the dolomitic areas of Gauteng where concentrated water causes internal erosion of the ground, so a repair that ignores the water source can leave the underlying problem to grow.

When to get more than a paving contractor

  • A dip that grows quickly or keeps returning after repair.
  • Cracks in walls or floors near the sinking paving.
  • A hole that opens under the paving or nearby.
  • Water that appears without rain, which may point to a leaking pipe.

In any of these cases, ask the municipality or a geotechnical engineer for advice before relaying. The Mail and Guardian's July 2026 report on Wilfordon Extension 11 in Roodepoort describes residents reporting sinkholes and shifting paving; the developer disputed the extent of the problems.

A good repair, step by step

For ordinary sinking, a contractor should lift the blocks in and around the low area, look for the cause, have any leak fixed by the right trade, rebuild and compact the base, re-bed and relay the pavers, then fill the joints. They should also check where the water from that area goes and add a drain or change the falls if it ponds. Our guide on why paving sinks and lifts explains the causes.

What drives the cost in Roodepoort

The contractor quotes you after measuring the job in Roodepoort. These are the things that move that quote:

  • The size of the sunken area.
  • Finding and fixing a leak or gutter problem, by the right trade.
  • Rebuilding the base to the depth the failure goes.
  • Drainage changes so water no longer collects there.
  • Professional advice where signs point to more than a paving fault.
