Paving in Fourways, Lonehill and the northern estates
Fourways, Lonehill, Dainfern and the cluster and estate developments around them. Paving here often has to satisfy a homeowners' association as well as a homeowner.
Estates and rules
This part of Johannesburg is known for its estates. Dainfern, established in 1985, describes itself as the first gated golf estate in South Africa and is run by the Dainfern Homeowners Association under a Memorandum of Incorporation and Estate Rules. Many estates and complexes in the area work in a similar way, which means paving on your own property can need approval before work starts.
The land here is part of the same granite area as Sandton and Midrand, the kind of residual granite soil that South African engineers have described as potentially collapsible. On tightly packed estate plots, where one property's run-off quickly becomes the neighbour's problem, drainage design matters.

Before you ask for quotes
Check your estate's rules on materials, colours, working hours, contractor access and deposits. Give contractors that information up front. Our guide to estate and complex paving rules explains the usual process, and commercial and estate paving covers shared roads and complex driveways.
