Dolomite on the East Rand

SRK Consulting engineers name the East Rand, with Soweto, the West Rand and Centurion, as parts of Gauteng underlain by dolomite where developments have been troubled by subsidence and sinkholes, and they point to concentrated water as a cause of internal erosion in that ground. Not every property in Edenvale or Bedfordview is on dolomite, but before a large paving job it is a fair question to ask, and a fair reason to take drainage seriously.

Older driveways and relays

Many homes in Edenvale and Bedfordview have driveways that are decades old. Common problems are a dip where the car stands, sunken sections near a downpipe or a garden tap, and edges that have spread. Where one area keeps sinking, look for a water source first: a leaking pipe, a blocked drain or a gutter emptying onto the paving. Fixing that before relaying is what stops the repair failing again.
