Paving in Sandton, Sandown and Rivonia
Large stands, long driveways and high expectations of the finish. Paving here is a big job, and the ground under it deserves a proper look before anyone quotes.
The ground under Sandton
Sandton sits on the granite of the Halfway House (Johannesburg) Dome. A study of hillslopes and soil profiles in the granite country between Johannesburg and Pretoria found that the soils change in a regular sequence from the top of a slope to the bottom. On a sloping Sandton stand, that means the ground under the gate can be different from the ground in front of the garage, and a contractor should check both.
Residual soils weathered from granite also have a history in South African engineering. Brink and Kantey described collapsible grain structures in residual granite soils in southern Africa as early as 1961: a soil that holds firm when dry can settle when it gets wet under load. On a driveway that is a reason to keep water out of the base, not a reason to panic.

Water heading for the Spruit
Rivonia is one of the suburbs the Braamfontein Spruit runs through on its way north to the Jukskei River. Stands that fall towards the stream valleys carry storm water downhill across driveways and patios. Paving here should be designed with falls and drains that move that water somewhere safe, rather than letting it soak in at the lowest edge.

What Sandton jobs usually look like
Double and triple driveways, turning circles at the front door, entertainment patios and pool surrounds are common requests. One contractor's published 2026 guide puts Sandton and Bryanston rates 10 to 15 percent above its Johannesburg average and links that to premium materials. Your own quote depends on your site, and the paving cost guide shows the published figures with their sources.
