A suburb on the Spruit

The Braamfontein Spruit, Johannesburg's longest stream, flows through Bryanston between River Club and Rivonia. Much of the suburb falls towards it. That shapes paving more than any other single fact: rain that lands on a Bryanston driveway in a December thunderstorm has to go somewhere, and if the paving does not send it to a drain or a planted area, it will find its own way through the joints and into the base.

Granite soils on the slopes

Like Sandton, Bryanston is on the granite between Johannesburg and Pretoria, where soil scientists have recorded soils that change in a regular sequence down each hillslope. Residual granite soils of this kind can be collapsible when wet, a behaviour South African engineers have written about since 1961. Put together with the slope, the practical point is simple: on a Bryanston stand, drainage design is part of the base, not an extra.

Common Bryanston paving work

  • Replacing older driveways where the blocks have dropped along the wheel lines.
  • New block or clay paving on long driveways with a turning area near the house.
  • Channel drains at the garage door or the gate, where water collects at the bottom of a slope.
  • Retaining edges where the driveway meets a falling garden bed.

Frequently asked questions

Why does water run into my Bryanston garage?

Usually because the driveway falls towards the garage with no drain across it. A channel drain in front of the door is a common fix; a contractor should check the levels first.

Is a steep driveway harder to pave?

It needs more care with the base, the edges and the falls. Herringbone patterns and good edge restraint help stop blocks creeping downhill.

Do you lay the paving?

No. We connect you with paving contractors who cover Bryanston. The contractor quotes you and does the work.
